Active“Thy Precocious Reader” Creative Writing & Reading Club – Kimberly Frassett – 4th to 8th GRADE unless especially precocious! (Tuesday)
This course will make an attempt to give your student an opportunity to learn in the style that Dorothy Sayers proposed in her world famous essay, “The Lost Tools of Learning.”
Book Club is designed for students who want to spend more time reading, discussing books, and exploring titles and genres that are new to them. All levels of readers are invited to join Book Club where the teacher facilitates small group discussions, offers reading instruction for all levels of readers, and supports students as they individually explore their personal interests.
Creative Writing will explore different genres of writing with the main goal of inspiring amazing ideas and constructing original pieces. This course will include student-selected writing topics and ideas and encourage experimentation with writing techniques. A deep understanding of different styles and modes of writing, along with the writing process will be emphasized in this fantastic elective.
In class books will be selected from Beautiful Feet Booksellers and will coordinate with Thy Colonial Experience curriculum. We will read from the History, Geography and Science Selections.
Homework will use library resources.
The class will go to the library together as a field trip to learn how to use it.
Written work done in this class will be included in the History of Early America sketchbook the students are writing and illustrating in “Thy Colonial Experience”. No other written homework will be required for either class.
Time in class will be devoted to Language and Grammar Skills, Readers Theater, Poetry Recital, Speed Reading Techniques, Latin and Greek roots, Early American Education Classic’s and other language games of interest to the growing mind.

On the Language side, we shall now have our vocabulary and morphology at our fingertips; henceforward we can concentrate on syntax and analysis (i.e., the logical construction of speech) and the history of language (i.e., how we came to arrange our speech as we do in order to convey our thoughts).
Our Reading will proceed from narrative and lyric to essays, argument and criticism, and the pupil will learn to try his own hand at writing this kind of thing. Many lessons–on whatever subject–will take the form of debates; and the place of individual or choral recitation will be taken by dramatic performances, with special attention to plays in which an argument is stated in dramatic form.”

This course runs for two 15 week semesters $300 per semester.
